Most people might head back to their roots when they get to feeling a bit homesick. Other folks might find a way to bring their homeland with them.

The Cains left Arkansas in 1989 so Rita could work at Pantex. She was a military brat and was able to adjust to her new home. Gary missed Arkansas, especially the catfish.

In July 2004, the couple opened Fat Cat Fish And Grill, inspired by Gary's father's nickname, to bring a taste of his roots to Amarillo.

There's one thing that sets this restaurant apart for other seafood establishments.

"Our fish come here swimming" says Gary Gain. That's right, the couple has live fish delivered to the restaurant. They are held in a tank till time for preparation. At first, they would drive to Arkansas to pick up the catfish. Now they have them delivered. By processing the fish on site, they prevent an overwhelming fish taste, keep the fish from tasting old and keeps in tender. It just melts in your mouth.

They also serve up chicken and burgers along with frog legs, gizzards. oysters (fried or on the hald shell) gator and other items for a change of pace for those who come often, as many do. Wheather you have a taste for catfish or not, this is still a great place for lunch or dinner.
